After a week of half term activities, when perhaps they haven’t eaten the healthiest food and have enjoyed several nice but naughty treats, it’s probably well timed.

And it may also give chiildren a chance to consider where their food comes from, and how it gets from the field to their forks.

Perhaps some of them even mananged a trip to an open farm during half term, and so to now focus on the end result, food on their plates, will round everything off nicely.

Healthy Eating Week is organised by the British Nutrition Foundation and the initiative will be launched by Princess Anne on Monday (June 1).

The week is supported by the National Farmers Union, and it was developed to increase knowledge and understanding of healthy eating, cooking and food provenance, as well as to promote the benefits of physical activity amongst children and young people of all ages.

Free schools resources, including food cards, games and activities have been made available to support teachers as they plan activities based around the week’s themes.

Schools are being set five health challenges, designed to engage children in thinking about food and healthy eating and to help motivate positive behaviour change.

The challenge themes are: Have Breakfast, Have 5 A Day, Drink Plenty, Get Active and Try Something New.

Perhaps your own child will be taking part and you can discuss with them what they have learnt.
