Farming Matters: A far cry from the usual bacon roll...

Of course this is only because that’s the location of the National Farmers Union AGM, but we farmer’s wives must be grateful for small mercies, and I would never turn down a chance to sample the excellent fayre provided by Hartwell chef Daniel Richardson.

And so we joined many other Vale farmers to hear a quick resume of the farming year, to witness the re-election of branch chairman Antony Aston, and to hear the thoughts of invited speaker, NFU national livestock board chairman Charles Sercombe (see news report on page 12)

Then we were seated and served the most delicious meal, followed by coffee and chocolates in the library.

I always enjoy the annual get together. It’s a great chance to chat with fellow farmers and their wives.

Many are concerned with the volitality of world prices in corn, milk and beef.

But Mr Sercombe has great confidence in the future of the industry and believes it is now looking like an attractive career option for young farmers.

Hopefully his confidence will prove well placed and we will continue to see growing numbers from the farming community enjoying the AGM.
