Alan Dee’s guide to the pick of next week’s TV

SATURDAY

Superstar (ITV1, 7.25pm)

People of Britain, are you ready to vote for a new Jesus?

Don’t worry, ITV1 bosses haven’t got tired of Britain’s Got Talent and branched out into starting their own religion.

Instead, after finding actors to take the lead roles in The Sound of Music, Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Oliver!, and The Wizard of Oz over on BBC One, Andrew Lloyd Webber is now making the move to ITV1 for his latest talent search as he looks for someone to play the Messiah in a new tour of rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

He’s already cast comedian Tim Minchin, former Spice Girl Melanie C and DJ Chris Moyles as Judas, Mary Magdalene and Herod respectively, so clearly the composer is willing to think outside the box when it comes to picking his leading man.

Andrew Lloyd Webber says: “I am looking for a really charismatic individual, someone who has huge physical presence as well as a great rock tenor voice.”

Sunday

Wallander (BBC One, 9pm)

Kenneth Branagh returns as the Swedish detective for three more cases.

In the first the dour detective has even managed to get himself a steady girlfriend, but their dreams of domestic bliss are soon shattered when, during a stroll through the property’s large garden, he trips over a decomposing hand.

Later, a girl’s skeleton is also unearthed, and Wallander must find out who she is, and who killed her, if he’s to get his life back on track.

Monday

Volcano Live (BBC Two, 8pm)

Kate Humble and Professor Iain Stewart are on hand to reveal the terrifying power of the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island.

One of the most active volcanoes on Earth, it produces between 250,000 and 650,000 cubic yards of lava each day. Put more simply, that’s enough to resurface a two-lane 20-mile-long road every 24 hours. Kate also visits Eyjafyallajokull, the Icelandic volcano that caused air traffic chaos in 2010.

Tuesday

Love Your Garden (ITV1, 8pm)

Alan Titchmarsh goes back to his roots and gets his fingers in some lovely loamy earth in this curiously enjoyable trip to the bottom of the garden.

It sees Alan surprise garden owners who have a great story to tell and whose outdoor space is in desperate need of a transformation.

While the owner is whisked away, Alan designs the new-look garden, taking inspiration from the best gardens in the area and asking for help from local people.

Wednesday

Super Tiny Animals (ITV1, 8pm)

ITV1 first introduced us to miniature animals last year, and it would seem it’s a trend that’s still developing. The programme returns to take a look at some more of the world’s most popular miniature pets, from cats small enough to fit in a tea-cup and a dog who can fit into a spoon.

Thursday

Case Sensitive (ITV1, 9pm)

The hugely successful crime thriller is back – and this time, it really is personal. While audiences were previously left to ponder the ambiguous nature of DS Zailer and DC Waterhouse’s relationship – is it strictly professional, or something more? – this new offering sees relations between the unlikely duo becoming even more fraught.

Friday

The Angelos Epithemiou Show (Channel 4, 10.35pm)

“Celebrity guests, decent bands and explosions. And survival tips. And fighting off an owl in a cupboard.” Angelos Epithemiou has no trouble summing up what his new show has to offer. And boy does it sound appealing.

To kick off the first show, Angelos interviews Embarrassing Bodies’ host Dr Christian Jessen and teenage pop sensation Conor Maynard becomes involved in a crazy quick-fire challenge in order to earn the right to sing his latest single, Vegas Girl.
