MP Greg Smith thanks volunteers in House of Commons for their work during the coronavirus pandemic

The Buckingham MP thanked volunteers who had delivered food parcels to vulnerable people during the coronavirus pandemic.

The community has come together to organise support networks for vulnerable people who are currently shielding during the pandemic.

Mr Smith said he had been 'blown away' by local generosity, that showcased 'the best of British spirit'.

MP Greg Smith said to the House of Commons today: "I would like to pay tribute to so many of my constituents who have gone above and beyond during this crisis.

"People in every corner of the constituency are playing their part.

"Once we are through Covid-19 I hope we can capture the very best of the great British spirit shown by these community heroes and strengthen our voluntary service for the long term."

The MP was taking part in a Commons debate on Coronavirus remotely.

He paid particular thanks to the Buckingham-based facebook group 'Buckingham Support Network', volunteers at St Laurence Church in Winslow, and the Bernwode Bus Buckinghamshire which collects foodbank donations from villages.

He also paid tribute to the Risborough Basket.

Covid 19 wasn't the only issue discussed by the Buckingham MP.

He also talked passionately about HS2, lamenting HS2's 'appalling' behaviour during the coronavirus outbreak.

He added that he had been in regular contact with HS2's Chief executive Mark Thurston throughout the crisis.

Concerns have been raised locally after photos surfaced of workers not adhering to social distancing, and there have been further accusations of workers breaking rules relating to staying on site after they were seen visiting local shops in Steeple Claydon.

Residents have aired concerns this may spread the virus in the village.

Mr Smith also discussed the Coronavirus job retention scheme, thanking the government for extending the furlough scheme into October.

He said it had involved a 'massive effort' from the Government but it was 'absolutely essential' the government provided job security where they could.
