Mothers of invention return for night of Friars nostalgia

Recapturing the spirit of the 1960s is the aim of a unique music night from the legends that brought you Aylesbury Friars.

Robin Pike, the former Aylesbury Grammar School teacher that founded the famous club with David Stopps, is the brainchild behind Mothers Revisited, which will be held at the Ex Services Club in Aylesbury on June 6.

The 60’s themed night is a homage to the Birmingham Mothers club which inspired Friars, and was once dubbed ‘The best club in the world’.

Robin explains: “I went there one Friday night and John Peel was playing and I remember thinking that this something I would like to do.

“I was living in London at the time and used to go to places like the Ram Jam Club, little clubs with magical atmospheres, I saw people like Ike and Tina Turner and Otis Reading in clubs like that.

“In the 1960s the whole scene was so exciting, we had people like Hendrix and Pink Floyd and all of those artists all happening at once. A little bit of that is what we are trying to recreate.”

It is 50 years since Robin first moved to Aylesbury, where he famously brought Mott The Hoople and Genesis to play school dances at Aylesbury Grammar School.

And to celebrate Friars, Mothers and the life of Friar’s first DJ Andy Dunkley, Robin and his team are putting on a fun night where they are encouraging revellers to wear sixties dress.

The night will also a vinyl DJ spinning songs of the era, a Friars-style light show and a bar. Faces from Friars past and present are expected to attend.

Robin said: “Andy was the first DJ that ever played at Friars, he was experienced when he came to us and had played at The Roundhouse in London and other clubs.

“It was great because he brought that to Aylesbury to our club and gave it that atmosphere.
