There was also the opportunity for local youngsters to take part in a series of fun runs with 63 children’s medals awarded and trophies for the winners, at the run on Sunday, May 15, which raised £5,200 for the Chilterns MS Centre.

Race organiser and community fundraiser from the MS Centre, Sharon Deacon, said: “Once again we saw a high number of competitors from local running clubs and the public and were delighted that so many children took part. The money raised from the event will directly benefit our centre members by funding treatment so they can gain greater control over their MS symptoms.”

It was an emotional day for centre goer Julie Dean, who took part in the race in her specialised wheelchair with her team of ‘pushers’.

The team were people who have been with Julie through different parts of her life including one of her brownies from when she was a Brown Owl; Debbie Allen whose dad also attends the centre; Aaron Cox, business manager at the centre who ran wearing a teddy costume, and her husband David. Julie visits the centre twice a week and she said: “I was straight back in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber the day after the race as it helps me with the overwhelming fatigue I get which is a very common symptom of MS. The run was exhausting but at the same time it was exhilarating as we reached the finish line, my team raised £940.”

Charlie May won the men’s race in a little over 35 minutes and the ladies’ race was won by Jodie Digby in a winning time of just over 40 minutes. Local businesses provided valuable help and support for the run and contributed to the total raised.

Major sponsors were Taylor Wimpey, with Perry’s of Aylesbury, Prestwood Motors and J&P Partnership also providing sponsorship. The local Mid-Counties Co-operative gave goody bags to the runners and the Great Missenden Lions supported the event on the day.
