Lights, camera, action as stately home stars in movie

Claydon House appears in the new screen version of Far From The Madding Crowd, which goes on general release in cinemas on May 1.

The adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel stars Carey Mulligan as heroine Bathsheba Everdene and Michael Sheen as her lovestruck suitor, Mr Boldwood.

Middle Claydon property Claydon House features as the home of the wealthy Mr Boldwood, where some of the most dramatic scenes take place.

And to tie in with the film’s release, two costumes worn by Carey Mulligan will be on display at Claydon until July 5.

There will also be information about the filming, which took place at Claydon over two weeks last year.  

One important scene was filmed on Claydon’s fine marquetry staircase – one of the most precious and delicate staircases at any National Trust property. 

House manager Rachel Flynn said: “No‐one is usually allowed on the staircase, so for this scene Michael Sheen wore only socks and Carey had foam attached to the bottom of her shoes.”

The film’s locations manager Alex Gladstone said: “Filming at Claydon was a genuine delight. 

“You felt as if you had stepped back in time as soon as you turned into the drive.”

Based on Hardy’s literary classic, Far from the Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene, who attracts three very different suitors.  

Far from the Madding Crowd is a Fox Searchlight/BBC Films production. It was filmed on location in Buckinghamshire and Dorset.

Claydon is open Saturday to Wednesday, 11am to 5pm.
