‘It didn’t teach me anything new’: Blind pensioner, 82, enjoys Fifty Shades of Grey while doing the ironing

The best selling story, which has just been released in cinemas, has shocked many people for its racy sex scenes – but 82-year-old Dana Brown says she doesn’t know what the fuss is about.

Mrs Brown who was able to listen to the sexy trilogy thanks to Calibre Audio Library in Weston Turville, said that while she thoroughly enjoyed the books, she was not shocked because she has ‘seen it all before’.

The twice-married pensioner, who lives in Aylesbury, said: “I listen to anything and everything, and I really enjoyed Fifty Shades of Grey.

“But I did think it was rather a shame that so many people got upset about it, I didn’t particularly like some bits but the story was fantastic.”

She added: “I’m 82 and I’ve seen it all before, it didn’t teach me anything new, and I don’t really know what all the fuss is about.

“I actually feel sorry for the women who haven’t had some of those feelings or experiences.”

Mrs Brown’s first husband was in the US Navy and was stationed all over the world between 1952 and 1982.

And Fifty Shades was made all the more enjoyable because Mrs Brown spent time in the Pacific North West where some of the book is based.

She said: “We were there for five years so I know a lot of the places the author was talking about, I thought it was really good.”

“The audio book was very well read and the reader got the different voices down to a fine art.”

The pensioner’s sight began to deteriorate in 2005 due to macular degeneration.

She had eye injections to try and slow the progress of the deterioration in her vision.

And news that her sight could not be saved was made all the more painful by the fact that she was in the middle of researching her family history, and was no longer able to view historical records and pictures.

And Mrs Brown, who has been married to her second husband Peter, 83, for 32 years and has four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren, said: “Calibre is a lifesaver, it really is. Their books are brilliant.

“My previous book was about Guy Gibson and the Dambusters and now I’m listening to Matron Knows Best, the reading is fantastic.

“I listen while I am doing chores around the house.”

She added: “Going blind was a terrible blow, and I can’t have an operation to fix the problem.

“That’s why Calibre is so important to me.”

Mrs Brown says that she won’t we visiting the cinema this week for the release of the Fifty Shades film and will wait for it to be released on DVD.

But when asked what she does to keep the romance alive in her relationship she offered these words of wisdom: “I am a very romantic person, but the trick is the little things, they are what matter the most.”

And the racy novels arenot just a hit with Mrs Brown. Calibre says that since the books became available they have become among their most popular titles.
