More than a hundred people have been targeted by hoax callers claiming to be from Aylesbury Town Council.

The council has urged people not to give out any information and to hang up when they receive calls which seem to be suspicious.

The calls consist of somebody claiming to be from the town council and calling regarding an accident.

Deputy town clerk Mark Broughton said: “We had between fifty and sixty calls from people concerned about this referred to us on Monday.

“We have also had between 20 and 30 people telling us about this via social media.

“If people receive calls like this they should report them to Action Fraud.

“This is a scam and is nothing to do with Aylesbury Town Council.

“We would also like to reassure people that the security of Aylesbury Town Council’s data has not been compromised and that all calls seem to be random. “

Aylesbury Vale District Council also reportedly received hundreds of calls on Monday about the issue.

A number of comments on the town council’s Facebook page say the hoax calls are coming from a number which ends with five zeros.

Anyone who has received a hoax call reporting to be from the town council should call Action Fraud directly on either 0330 303 0800 or 0300 123 2040.
