A team of Aylesbury fundraisers has been presented with a global award to recognise the amazing efforts of the members in raising cash to research into a cure for cancer.

The family team of sisters, cousins and children led by Luci Di Zenobia and known as La Dolce Vita has taken part in the Relay for Life Aylesbury for the last five years, raising £37,000 in total.

Last year alone the team raised £17,022.

The team was recognised by the American Cancer Society for making an outstanding contribution to the fight against cancer.

Members were presented with the Spirit of Relay team award at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Aylesbury by the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire Mr Joe Barclay, and individual certificates were presented by senior manager Serena Daw from Cancer Research UK.

Relay for Life is a global fundraising phenomenon that started in the United States in 1985 in aid of the American Cancer Society, and now takes place in 20 countries including the UK where the money raised goes to Cancer UK.

La Dolce Vita was nominated for the award by the Aylesbury relay committee for its dedication to fund raising throughout the year, organising charity balls, quiz nights, parties, auctions and raffles as well as taking part in the relay.

Team captain Luci Di Zenobia has been motivating her family to raise money for cancer charities for over 30 years, sincer her father’s cancer diagnosis. In that time many other family members have been diagnosed with survivors taking part in the relay each year.

She said: “Relay for Life Aylesbury keeps our minds focused all year round and lets the team members feel as if they are really doing something, because every little bit gets us closer to the end goal of a cure.”

Paul Watson from Aylesbury Relay for Life organising committee, that nominated La Dolce Vita for the award, said: “La Dolce Vita members contribute in every way to the achievements of Relay for Life Aylesbury, both before the event and at the weekend event itself.”

During the relay teams - many in fancy dress - walk for 24 hours around a track.

The next Aylesbury relay takes place at Aylesbury Rugby Club on Saturday July 5 from noon.
