Residents around Aylesbury to being urged to get active in aid of two national charities.
Everyone Active, which manages the Swan Pool Leisure Centre and Aqua Vale Sports Centre, on behalf of Aylesbury Vale District Council, are hosting a month-long activity campaign during November to encourage people to raise money while keeping fit. The fundraising total will be shared between the Anthony Nolan Trust, a charity which works to save the lives of people with blood disorders and blood cancer, and type 1 diabetes charity JDRF.
A range of activities will be available at Everyone Active’s sites with the aim of getting people to try something new and each week there will be a different activity focus.
The Anthony Nolan Trust matches individuals willing to donate their blood stem cells or bone marrow to people who desperately need lifesaving transplants. Everyone Active has already encouraged more than 700 people to become donors for Anthony Nolan and has raised more than £120k for the charity over the past 18 months.
Through its November campaign and other fundraising activities, the sports and leisure provider is hoping to raise an additional £150k, bringing its overall fundraising total for Anthony Nolan to a quarter of a million pounds.
JDRF funds research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes. There are currently 400,000 people in the UK with the condition, and over 29,000 of them are children. As well as supporting research into the condition, JDRF also offers support and advice for people affected and their families. Everyone Active has pledged to raise £100k for the charity as part of a new partnership.
Swan Pool and Leisure Centre will be putting on a host of activities to raise money including a football tournament. Aqua Vale Swimming and Fitness Centre will be hosting a 12 hour spinathon, rowing challenge and a Hula Hoop challenge. Both centres will have tombola raffles.
Mathew Nicholson, Everyone Active contract manager said: “Both the Anthony Nolan Trust and JDRF are charities very close to our hearts here at Everyone Active. Here in Aylesbury we hope to raise funds for those suffering from blood cancer and affected by Type 1 diabetes, as well as increase awareness of the diseases.
“Our month of activity is the perfect opportunity to get active by trying something new at the same time as raising money for a fantastic cause. We are offering a variety of activities for people of all ages and abilities and we really hope to inspire the local community to get involved in our fundraising efforts.”
