First pictures whet the appetite for The Garage in Buckingham

It was a Presbyterian chapel, a school, a meeting house and a garage '“ then left derelict for 30 years.

But in three weeks, the Grade II listed building in Well Street will open as a swanky wine bar and restaurant.

The Garage, promising ‘great food, great drinks and great service’, is maintaining a lot of vintage features from previous use.

Striking beams fill the roof space while original pillars and industrial lights ensure the garage vibe remains.

“I absolutely fell in love with the building,” said owner Sally Terry.

“All the old nooks and crannies, we’ve tried to keep, while bringing it back into public use.

“It’s such an iconic building and we’re bringing it back to life.

“I think Buckingham, with The Hidden Quarter, is really trying to become vibrant.

“It’s moving in that direction and we’re delighted to be a part of it.”

On the ground floor, there will be sharing platters, fresh breads, burgers, steaks, beers and cocktails.

Upstairs, will be a more ‘structured dining experience’ with four-course menus and more than 70 wines.

Head chef Ray Ziemelis has worked at Michelin-starred restaurants.

It will be open seven days a week, with teas, coffees and Sunday roasts.

On both floors, there will be constant reminders of the building’s rich history.

During the renovation work, coins, paperwork and handwritten letters dating back to the 1820s fell from the floorboards and ceiling. The items have been taken to the museum at the Old Gaol.
