‘Farming is sexy again’


NFU national livestock board chairman Charles Sercombe spoke to members about his enthusiasm for the future of the industry.
Despite the current volatility of prices across all sectors he believes a global market presents great opportunities for farmers.

Hide AdOn a recent visit to China he saw evidence of the growing market, as the people there move towards a Western diet that involves eating more red meat, as well as cuts not typically eaten here.
He said: “In the medium to long term I am incredibly confident about this industry that we are all in. There are a lot of people to feed in the world.
“I’m encouraged that farming is becoming a sexy industry again, and young people are keen to get back into it.
“There are people out there who want to be in this industry and want to learn. With all the technology you’ll need people younger and cleverer than me to move it forward, but I have confidence.”
