The boss of a gym based near the Exchange Street car park in Aylesbury says the rise in fees there has impacted on his business.
In September, charges at the car park rose by up to 50% and owner of Anytime Fitness Roger Johnson said: “Because of the increase in charges people now have to pay £2 if they want to come to us for an hour-long session.
“If people use the gym three or four times a week the costs soon mount up.
“How they expect to encourage people to use the town centre I have no idea.
“I think the worst thing for us is moving the free parking back to after 9pm.”
Angela Macpherson, cabinet member for leisure, communities and civic amenities at AVDC said: “Exchange Street carpark has seen an increase of more than 3,500 visits in the last month and this is expected to rise yet further in the run- up to Christmas.
“Aylesbury’s parking charges are comparable to neighbouring towns.
“Recent figures show that footfall is up in the nearby Hale Leys shopping centre and we’re confident that these charges are not adversely affecting Aylesbury businesses, whose success continues to be one of our main priorities.
