A donation has been made to a fund set up in memory of a young heart victim.

Housebuilders CALA Homes has donated £500 to a charity set up by its long-standing landscaping contractor, Trevor Lane.

Trevor, who owns Lane’s Landscaping Contractors, set up the Matthew Lane Fund in 1997 following the death of his son Matthew, after he suffered heart problems at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Trevor said: “Following the devastating death of our son Matthew, we were keen to set up a charity which would honour his memory and also have something tangible to remember him by. We were able to set up a 10km footpath running through the countryside and surrounding villages of Quainton and North Marston. The path is named Matthew’s Way and biennial walks are held, which have raised money for the fund.

“We have strong ties with Stoke Mandeville Hospital who supported us greatly during such a difficult period in our lives and over the years we have been able to donate funds for vital equipment to the Stoke Mandeville Neonatal Unit.

“My wife and I were also asked to help set up and be co-founders for a support group called Baby Unit Relatives and Parents Support (BURPS), which is still going strong.

“I am really grateful to CALA’s generous donation to the fund. I have been working closely with the company for over 20 years and am overwhelmed by their support. The fund has just donated £4,500 to Stoke Mandeville Hospital which is being put towards the funding of a Dual Channel EEG and aEEG machine to help monitor brain function in new-borns on the Neonatal Unit.”

Michelle Relton, sales manager for CALA Homes’ Chiltern region based in Beaconsfield said: “Trevor has worked with CALA Homes for many years and we were delighted to be able to contribute to the tremendous work he is doing. The Matthew Lane Fund has achieved so much in support of Stoke Mandeville Hospital and the local community and we wish Trevor and his family all the best in continuing the charity’s vital work.”

As well as charity work, Trevor has also been heavily involved in community work in his local area and was awarded a British Empire Medal last year for his services to charity and the community.

Trevor added: “Receiving the award has been a complete surprise and honour. When I received the letter from the Cabinet Office I couldn’t believe it was true and it took a while to sink in. It’s humbling to know that people within the community have nominated me for such an award.”
