Digital skills offer for primaries

A computer company is offering Aylesbury primary schools free workshops to help children get the first step on the digital skills ladder.

This year’s ComputerXplorers Programming for Primaries Awareness Day is to be part of British Science Week (BSW) for the first time and takes place on BSW’s digital day which is Friday, March 11.

The aim of the initiative is to underline the importance of coding and programming and shine a spotlight on the resources available to schools to help them engage children at an early age.

More than a thousand children and 80 teachers have already benefited from ComputerXplorers’ free Programming for Primaries workshops and training sessions since the initiative was launched in 2014.

Deborah Trujillo-Philippopoulos, director of ComputerXplorers Oxfordshire, said: “We’re delighted to be part of British Science Week in March. Programming skills are vital to almost every aspect of technology and science and at ComputerXplorers one of our key aims is to help primary schools nurture an early interest in computing.

“During the 2016 Awareness Day we’ll be teaching children how to programme their own computer game in our free programming workshops which have been very popular in previous years. Alternatively we’re offering a free Introduction to Programming session for Primary School teaching staff.”

Non-specialist teachers in the primary sector can find the curriculum for computing challenging but with expert guidance and support from ComputerXplorers it can be much less overwhelming. All workshops are offered in-school and are a great opportunity for non-specialist teachers to enhance their skills.

Programming for Primaries is supported by Microsoft and CAS (Computing at School) and the workshops align with the Government’s primary education strategy.

Nicky Morgan, Secretary of State for Education, said: “I am determined that all young people learn the skills they need to fulfil their potential and coding is a prime example of that. We know a significant number of jobs in the future will be in the IT industry and we want young people to be ready to take those opportunities, regardless of their background.”
