Dan tells his story in BBC documentary

A student who dreams of being a DJ is to star in a new BBC TV series.

Dan Mai, 20, from Grendon Underwood, is appearing on The Unbreakables, a documentary which follows the lives of teenagers with disabilities at National Star College in Gloucestershire.

The cameras followed Dan over the course of nine months during his first year at the specialist college where he is studying creative and peforming arts.

Dan loves music and is keen to be a radio DJ, having already done some work experience at a local radio station.

Dan said: “I’d love to be a radio DJ and I am always creating my own play list.

“I’d be good on radio because I have the voice for it!”

Dan, who has cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. has been learning life skills to help him be more independent.

He said: “I’ve been learning how to make a shopping list, buying the food and then cooking.

“I love food, especially spicy food.”

His mother Sharon said Dan had changed a great deal in the past year.

She said: “He’s definitely matured and his conversation skills have changed immensely.

“He was in a specialist unit before where there were no other people at his level.

“At National Star he is with his peers and now has a social life.

“He has become much more independent and he can now stay on his own at home, something he would never have done before.”

Dan has been awarded funding to return for a second year at National Star in September.

He said: “I’m a cheerful person and though it was tough to be away from my mum at first I am loving National Star.

“I love the idea of being on TV.

“I can’t wait.”

The series starts on Thursday July 30 at 9pm on BBC Three.
