Bank Holiday blaze 'threatened to burn down the whole of Aylesbury High Street'

Town was shut down on bank holiday Monday as a blaze engulfed Infernos tanning salon.

Three fire engines raced to the scene to put out the fire, as smoke billowed down Aylesbury High Street.

The scene was cordoned off by brave emergency services who battled to contain the blaze.

One man was treated by South Central Ambulance Service as he was injured by inhaling smoke from the fire.

The fire service reported that 20% of the ground floor was damaged by the fire.

The first and second floors however were 100% damaged by the smoke.

Neighbouring properties also were damaged by the smoke emitted from the fire.

Eyewitnesses who did not wish to be named said they were walking past the Harrow pub when they saw thick black smoke billowing out from the back of Inferno's tanning salon.

"It was quite scary, for a while it looked like the whole row of shops might get engulfed in the flames.

"It could have destroyed the High Street pretty quickly if emergency services didn't get there so promptly.

"All credit to them for intervening, and working through the Coronavirus Pandemic too."

Another bystander added that the incident was 'scary', and it was lucky things didn't 'get out of hand'.

Firefighters used hose reels, sets of breathing apparatus, two fans and a toolkit to return the property to normal.
