Council marking the 75th anniversary of VJ day with online celebrations

This Saturday, Buckinghamshire Council’s social media pages (@BucksCouncil) will be sharing stories, photos, videos – and even some special performances – to mark VJ Day. A whole range of posts have been planned to cover the history and significance of VJ Day as well as how the day is being marked locally and nationally.

To help residents commemorate the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, Buckinghamshire Council has also pulled together some creative suggestions, educational resources and fun ideas on how to mark the day respectfully and responsibly.

Ideas include hosting a socially-distanced garden party with your household or support bubble, downloading posters and colouring sheets to personalise at home, or using a variety of online resources to discover your own local and family connections to World War II.

"For me, commemorating VJ Day is personally important as it was the day my father, who had served in the Far East campaign for 4 years during the war, was able to return home.

“Despite traditional events being scaled back in line with the government’s guidance around social distancing and mass gatherings, there’s still plenty of goodwill to mark the day here in Buckinghamshire. I’d like to wish everyone across the county a safe and peaceful VJ Day 75, and pay my respects and thank those who gave so much during the Second World War.”
