Council in '˜conversation' over David Bowie tribute in Aylesbury as Friars boss plans worldwide simultaneous playing of Starman at noon on Saturday

It comes after Friars supremo David Stopps called for a statue of the star, who died on Monday.

He debuted his world famous Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album at Friars Aylesbury in 1972, as well as his Hunky Dory record the previous year.

The first line of the first song on the Ziggy album, Five Years, even references Aylesbury’s Market Square.

Steve Bowles, deputy leader of Aylesbury Vale District Council, said: “The death of David Bowie has understandably been met with shock and sadness by many in Aylesbury Vale. Bowie’s influence cannot be understated in the cultural legacy of Aylesbury’s Friars Club.

“We’re in conversation with Dave Stopps, the man behind Friars, to discuss the best way in which Aylesbury can pay its respects to David Bowie and commemorate his important influence on our town.”

Tomorrow (Saturday) a memorial will be held under the arches in Market Square and there will be a petition people can sign calling for the statue.

Mr Stopps is attempting to organise a worldwide simultaneous playing of Bowie’s iconic Starman at noon on Saturday. It will be played in Aylesbury tomorrow at noon, when the memorial event kicks off.

Mr Stopps said he had radio stations in America and Australia on board and has been in contact with BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio 6.

He said: “It’s already going viral and we’re hoping that it will all come together. We just want people, wherever they are, to listen to Starman at noon tomorrow as a way to celebrate his memory.”
