Could our Pearl become one of the UK’s youngest MPs?
A 27-year-old district councillor will not be standing for re-election – but she will challenge to become one of the youngest MPs in the country.
Pearl Lewis has represented the Luffield Abbey ward since 2010 but will not stand for Aylesbury Vale District Council re-election because she wants to spend more time with her husband James.
Ms Lewis, who got married in September and lives with James in Stony Stratford, is a prospective Tory MP for Hayes and Harlington.
She said she has no regrets about her time as a district councillor and is most proud of her work on rural broadband.
“It’s been five years and I have loved it to bits,” she said. “But I’m hoping to spend more time with my husband.
Ms Lewis, who is a quality assurance manager at the University of Buckingham, spoke at my her meeting council meeting this week.
She said: “I would like to see more young people getting involved. I know how rewarding it is to be a district councillor - not just professionally but personally too. I hope my legacy is inspiring more people under 30 to get into politics.”
