The 46 year old, whose parents still live in the village, is standing in his guise as The Pub Landlord in the South Thanet constituency in Kent.

Mr Murray has formed the Free United Kingdom Party and set up a website as part of his campaign, with the message ‘Other parties offer the moon on a stick.

‘We’ll do better than that: a British moon on a British stick.’

A spokesman for UKIP said: “At last, serious competition in the constituency.”

Mr Murray has set up a 13-point manifesto with pledges including ‘revaluing the pound at one pound ten pence so it is worth ten pence more.’

The South Thanet seat is currently held by Conservative Laura Sandys, after she won it from Labour in 2010.
