Charity marks 70 years of helping the elderly in Bucks

Age UK celebrates its 70th birthday, at Quarrendon Community Centre - Sir Henry Aubrey Fletcher cuts the cake, watched by Giulia Johnson - Age UK chief executive

Age UK Bucks held an event for some of its volunteers and carers as well as those who benefit from the charity on Tuesday September 29 at Meadowcroft Community Centre in Aylesbury.

The Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher attended and cut the celebratory cake.

Gill Lyle, commercial services manager at Age UK Bucks said: “The event was very successful and we had a lot of people turn up to celebrate this special anniversary.”

Mrs Lyle originally joined the charity as a volunteer befriender and said she felt this role was amongst the charity’s most important work.

She said: “I first got involved as a befriender when my mum died and I get a huge amount out of it.

“It is a great way of having a real friendship with an older person.

“As befrienders we help people by getting their shopping or by taking them to their GP appointment.”

The charity receives funding from Bucks County Council but also relies on donations.
