Waterside Theatre manager Elizabeth Adlington has stepped down from her role in the same week that the theatre celebrates its fifth birthday.

Mrs Adlington has held the role for the majority of the time that the theatre in Aylesbury has been open (she briefly stepped down in November 2012 and was replaced by Jamie Baskeyfield for six months before returning in March 2013).

She said: “The previous five years has seen Aylesbury Waterside Theatre and ATG bring world class theatre and some of the biggest and best shows, theatrical companies and talent to the stage right at the heart of the Vale.

“The building itself is one which lends itself to being more than just a theatre and I’m confident that the team at the Waterside will continue to delight the people of Aylesbury with engaging and exciting theatrical experiences and opportunities to enjoy and explore their local theatre.”

Mrs Adlington has left to pursue ‘a new challenge’ according to the Ambassador Theatre Group, which manages the theatre on behalf of Aylesbury Vale District Council.

Her replacement is currently being recruited.

An ATG spokesman said: “The next chapter at the Waterside will see new leadership as Elizabeth Adlington steps down from her position to pursue a new professional challenge outside of ATG and a restructured management team leads the venue with a new strategic focus on events and conferencing alongside the theatre’s core business of delivering a high quality programme of shows and performances.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Elizabeth for her dedication in leading Aylesbury Waterside Theatre from concept to opening and for overseeing the hugely successful past five years of operation, and wish her all the very best for the future.”

Meanwhile, an agreement has been reached between the district council and ATG on a new arrangement for the Waterside that will see the management fee reduced over a five-year period.

Details of the fee have not been made public.

The new funding arrangement will become effective from October 2016 while ATG’s contract to run the theatre lasts until 2025.

Councillor Angela Macpherson, district council cabinet member for leisure, communities and civic amenities said: “We are delighted to continue to work alongside the team at The Waterside to provide a world class theatre and a diverse and flexible leisure resource to the town and beyond.

“We would like to extend our personal gratitude for all the hard work, determination and vision Elizabeth has shown from the very early days when construction of the theatre first began, right through to the excitement of the opening night and until the present day.

“It is a testament to Elizabeth that the theatre has proved to be such a success as it celebrates its fifth anniversary.

“The theatre has become an amazing asset to the town, and will no doubt continue to be, with the on-going development of the Exchange Street area.”
