Butchers set to close in Aylesbury

Tom Cobb, who runs Cobb’s butchers with his wife Debbie in Parton Road, Aylesbury, says he will be closing the store so he can have more time to himself.

Mr Cobb, 52, said: “Some people have said it’s sad I will be closing because I have been here for 16 years.

“It’s sad that I won’t be selling the shop on to another butcher.”

Mr Cobb served Prime Minister David Cameron at his store in December 2013, in a move that landed the PM in hot water.

After Mr Cameron tweeted a photo of himself buying ten lamb cutlets from the store to show he was supporting the Small Business Saturday Initiative he was then spotted spending money in national chains including Waterstones and Caffe Nero.

Mr Cobb said: “The whole thing was put on for Small Business Saturday and it helped with the profile of the business.

“I didn’t treat him any differently – I served him as if he was any other customer.”

Mr Cobb said he had served a number of television personalities over the years but said he didn’t want to divulge any names.

Mr Cobb, who lives in Bicester began learning his trade in butchery on Saturday mornings at the age of thirteen at a store in Haddenham.He became manager aged just 19.

Mr Cobb said: “I’ve decided I don’t want the hassle of owning my own business anymore.

“I may still work in another butchers part-time but I want more time to myself and I want to enjoy life.”

The shop in Parton Road is set to open for business for the last time on Friday January 30, 15 years after Mr Cobb moved to the site.

Customers have been posting messages on the butcher’s Facebook page, wishing the couple luck for the future and saying they will be missed.

Customers have until January 23 to place any remaining large deep freeze orders.
