Students at The Cottesloe School welcomed Sir Peter Gershon, chairman of Tate and Lyle, The National Grid and The Aircraft Carrier Alliance.

After a meeting with senior members of staff including Cottesloe Chair of Governors, Roy Collis, headteacher Mr McBurnie, assistant headteacher, Mrs Lynam, achievement Leader, Mrs Markey, parent, Chris Greenfield, and head boy and girl, Kubi Usturnsemeli and Georgina Oliver, Sir Peter gave a speech to the students about business, explaining his own business ventures and journey throughout his time in the industry and the key changes which he experienced during his rise to the top

He said: “You have to have the courage to do what you believe is right, even if this is not widely supported. This separates a dreamer from an achiever.”

The students were able to take the opportunity to have a full question and answer session with him, commenting afterwards how inspiring and motivating the speech was. The visit finished with a tour around the school, including the new sports block and facilities Cottesloe have to offer.

Sir Peter offered many pieces of advice to the students. He said: “To be successful in business, it is heavily dependent on your ability to take risks and adapt, challenge yourself to make a change, the world is changing and if you want to succeed you need to accept the change and build with it.” Georgina Oliver, Head Girl.
