The council will now take away up to three items at a cost of £75, while any additional items are charged at £5 each up to a maximum of eight.

Many residents choose to take these types of items to Household Waste Recycling Centres in Aylesbury, Aston Clinton or Buckingham, but people unable to do this now have the option of paying AVDC to come and take the items away for them.

As part of the service, the council will also collect any unwanted small electrical items, including hairdryers and kettles and textiles, including linen and clothes, free of charge.

Cabinet member for environment and health Sir Beville Stanier said: “There are times when a large piece of household furniture or equipment comes to the end of its life.

“While some residents can take the item to one of the recycling sites, we are able to help those who would prefer for it to be collected by disposing of it safely for them.

“Many of our residents don’t want to suffer the cost and inconvenience of hiring a van or struggling to get large items into the car and down to the tip.
