Army award for young fusilier

A young soldier has won an army award after finishing his recruit training. Fusilier Malachi Joyce, 20, from Haddenham, has successfully completed the Combat Infantryman's Course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire.

His platoon commander, Captain Bill Harris, said: “Fusilier Joyce has been awarded the Soldiers’ Soldier prize. This goes to the recruit who his peers think has contributed the most to the platoon, so he has the most valued award of all – the respect of his fellow recruits.

“Although a quiet soldier, he has high personal standards and has worked tirelessly on behalf of his fellow recruits. This is a well-deserved award.” Fusilier Joyce received his award at the pass out parade ceremony held at the Infantry Training Centre on Friday, January 22.

Fusilier Joyce said: “Before joining the army I spent some time in the building trade. It wasn’t really for me. Being out in the open air getting my hands dirty isn’t a problem, I just wanted to do it with a rifle in my hand.

“The army lifestyle is what I wanted. After the first few weeks at Catterick I got a bit homesick, like everyone else, but it was what I wanted to do so I stuck at it.

“You all help each other to get through the course. It feels good, really good to be given this award, I’ve just tried to help people where I can.”

Speaking before Friday’s parade ceremony, Fusilier Joyce added: “My mum will be surprised when she sees me collecting an award on the parade.”

Following a spot of well-earned leave Fusilier Joyce will join his new unit the 1st Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers based in Tidworth, Wiltshire.
