When critics talked about Aylesbury entering the space age with the Friars Square shopping centre development, they weren’t far wrong, judging by this picture, believed to have been taken in the late 1970s.

The cafe building – which later became a Wimpey – caused a great deal of controversey and so too did the ‘fountain’ in the bottom right, which was beset with problems including leaks from the moment it was used, and was later removed.
