More than £7,000 has been donated to the Alzheimer’s Society for its Buckinghamshire Befriending Scheme.

Nicole Palmer, services manager at the Alzheimer’s Society, along with representatives from Heart of Bucks, attended Buckinghamshire Building Society’s AGM to receive a cheque for £7,117.20 on Wednesday, April 27.

The befriending scheme is run by the Alzheimer’s Society and aims to improve the quality of life of people living with dementia who may be feeling lonely or isolated. The volunteer befrienders receive full training and are able to offer friendship, support and encouragement in small groups, over the phone or on a one-to-one basis.

Buckinghamshire Building Society established a charitable foundation with Heart of Bucks in 2013 in order to be part of and support the local community. Every year they ask their members to vote on how they would like the income from the foundation to be awarded.

Andrew Craddock, CEO at Buckinghamshire Building Society, said: “I am delighted that our members have voted for the funds from our charitable foundation in 2015 to go to the Buckinghamshire branch of the Alzheimer’s Society and that we were able to provide a donation of over £7,000.

“This will go to the befriending project which will provide support to the 1 in 6 people over the age of 80 who have dementia.”

Heart of Bucks are able to support Buckinghamshire Building Society in reaching their charitable objects through the management of their fund. The shortlist of charities are carefully selected by Heart of Bucks, allowing the members to vote on their charity of the year with full confidence that the organisation has gone through the due diligence required to receive funding.

If you can spare an hour or two of your time on a regular basis, during office hours, you could become a valued befriender and make a real difference to someone’s life. In addition to full training, befrienders will also receive on-going support, out of pocket expenses and will earn Buckinghamshire Time Credits.
