Action from Aylesbury's first ever Soapbox Derby

Most dads enjoy watching car racing so as a Father's Day treat this year, why not take your dad along to see sporting vehicles of an un-motorised variety.

Propelled purely by sheer courage, the gravity of a hill, and a big push at the start line, loads of colourful and imaginative lean, mean, racing machines are expected at this year’s Aylesbury Soapbox Derby.

Last year’s first derby proved massively popular and saw a fiercely contested race by karts of all sizes including a Luna buggy and even a shed!

Held from 11am - 4pm on Sunday (June 19) at Whitehill Park in Aylesbury, the day promises to be lots of fun.

Those who have entered a kart (the closing date for entries was earlier this month) have been working on creating their unique machines for weeks now, and there will be prizes for winning teams in junior and senior categories, as well as a prize for the best looking kart as voted for by the public on the day.

The 2015 winner was a brilliant bumble bee kart constructed from an old garden chair, pieces of scrap wood and a lot of imagination.

There is no cost to participate or spectate, so pop along on Father’s Day with all the family to enjoy a free fun packed day.

In addition to the kart races there will be a host of other activities on offer including music, sumo suits, face painting, inflatables, crafts and games, all provided by the hard work of the Aylesbury Town Council events team.

The Works from Market Square in Aylesbury will be there with their lovely ice cream bike selling their utterly delicious ice creams, along with Just Baguettes selling scrumptious filled snacks and The Coffee Stop with welcome beverages, so there will be plenty of refreshment available.
