Online DVLA service to cut paperwork wait from six weeks to five days

The DVLA has launched a new service which it says will slash the waiting times for drivers applying for replacement logbooks.

The "get a vehicle logbook service" allows motorists who have lost or damaged their vehicle’s original V5C log book to apply for a duplicate online and receive a new copy within five days.

Around half a million people apply for a replacement log book every year and it can take up to six weeks for the application to be processed and a new copy sent out. Since the service launched last week almost 5,000 drivers have used it.

Julie Lennard, DVLA chief executive, said: “We know how important a log book is to motorists so if you have lost or damaged yours, the quickest way to get your duplicate document is go to GOV.UK.”

The service is the second log book tool launched by the DVLA this year. In June it began to allow owners to change their address on the V5C online rather than having to do so by post. So far 300,000 motorists have used this service.

The agency is encouraging motorists to use its web services wherever possible to reduce pressure on its Swansea offices. Drivers have been faced with significant delays when making postal applications to the DVLA as it is operating with reduced staff levels due to social distancing restrictions.

It says that online applications are not affected by the delays.

As well as log book changes, drivers can apply for, renew or replace a driving licence; tax a vehicle or declare it as off the road; notify the DVLA that they have sold a vehicle; and apply to keep or assign a personalised registration.
