Berkhamsted group goes back to 80s

Jim Cartwright’s award wining play ROAD sees characters reeling from the effects of recession and high unemployment.

But the inhabitants of the Lancashire street have a party to go to. The vagrant Scullery is the tour guide, introducing the audience to the colourful characters all trying to find some kind of escape from their squalid existence.

Moving from street corner to living room, bedroom to kitchen, the audience meets the residents of ‘Road’, glimpsing their socially and emotionally wretched lives.

The play is an arresting mix of humour and pathos, transporting the audience with energy, passion and poetry to hopefully leave them uplifted and reminded of the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit.

Road is brought to the Court Theatre in Tring by the Berkhamsted Theatre Company, the company’s first play since their award winning comedy Bedroom Farce in 2014. The play is directed by Tony Bessick, a professional actor who appeared in a production of the play in 2006 and who has worked in many Cartwright productions over the years.

Patrons should note that the play contains explicit language and adult themes and is not suitable for under 16s.

Road will be at The Court Theatre at 7.30pm from Wednesday March 29 through to Saturday April 1.
