The data published by the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) shows that Thames Valley Police issued more fines for breaches of lockdown laws than any other police force in England and Wales.

The number equates to an average of around 20 fines issued per day.

Police forces have been given powers to hand out a £60 penalty, reduced to £30 if paid within two weeks, for breaking the lockdown rules.

The Bucks Herald contacted Thames Valley Police, who were keen to point out that 649 fines represents one fine for every 3,710 people - or 0.03% of the population of the Thames Valley region.

Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, John Campbell, has given the following statement: “As we continue to adapt to life fighting the spread of Coronavirus, I would again like to extend my sincere thanks to our communities who have stepped up to protect lives and the NHS.

“It is amazing to see the community spirit and generosity being shown. There are so many people playing their part.

“As a Force we are continuing to engage with our communities to help them understand the importance of us all abiding by the government advice to stay indoors.

“Many people have called into us about Coronavirus breaches or reported them online and we have also had contact from the public on social media asking us to take action to protect them, protect our communities and protect the NHS to help stop the spread of this virus.

“Whilst we continue to engage, explain and encourage people to abide by the lockdown restrictions, we have issued 649 fines, made arrests, and used closure orders, to fulfil our duty in protecting the public.

“Where we have issued fines, these have primarily been as a result of people travelling for non-essential reasons however again, I must stress the fines we have issued represents a small fraction of the 2.3 million population of the Thames Valley. The vast majority of the public are taking notice and for this, I once again, sincerely thank them.”

Across England and Wales, 9,176 fines were issued for breaching lockdown laws during the month-long period.

Sara Glen, the NPCC's lead for charging and out of court disposals, said that around eight out of 10 people fined across England and Wales were men, and two-thirds were aged under-35.
