Coronavirus update: 786 people die in 24 hours in the UK as PM remains in intensive care unit

Last night it was announced that Prime Minister Boris Johnson's condition had deteriorated and he is now in the intensive care unit at St Thomas' Hospital in London. Mr Johnson tested positive for coronavirus on 27 March and was taken to hospital on Sunday evening after failing to recover from the disease at home.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is standing in for the Prime Minister while he is unwell.

6,159 people have now died in total from the disease in the UK. Over 50,000 people have tested positive across the country, but only a tiny fraction of people have been tested.

Globally, the number of dead is now 76,439. Nearly 1.4 million are known to have contracted the disease.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Buckinghamshire stands at 300 but this is expected to increase when the latest data becomes available.

The latest NHS advice to help stop the spread of coronavirus is that you should only leave the house for one of the four following reasons:

- Shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible

- One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle – alone or with members of your household

- Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person

- Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home

- Ensure you are two metres apart from anyone outside of your household

You should also:

- Wash your hands with soap and water often – for at least 20 seconds

- Wash your hands as soon as you get home

- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

- Put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands

- Not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
