Aylesbury runner powers through global marathon challenge for air ambulance

An Aylesbury endurance athlete is pushing his body to the limit on a global stage, running seven marathons in seven days across seven continents to raise life-saving funds for Thames Valley Air Ambulance.
An Aylesbury man is already three marathons into one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet — with a fourth race taking place today.
Derek Spence is currently competing in the World Marathon Challenge, running seven full marathons in seven days across seven continents, all in support of Thames Valley Air Ambulance.
The challenge began in Antarctica, before moving on to Africa and Australia, with Derek completing a full 42.2km race on each continent in just three days. Today, he lines up for marathon number four in Asia, battling fatigue, extreme conditions and relentless travel between races.

Despite the physical toll, Derek has already raised over £15,000 for the life-saving charity, far exceeding his original £7,000 target.
Speaking during the challenge, Derek said: “This is without doubt the toughest thing I’ve ever done — but knowing it’s helping Thames Valley Air Ambulance keeps me moving forward.”
Derek, a member of Aylesbury Rugby Club, is no stranger to extreme endurance events, but admits this challenge is pushing him further than ever before.
With three marathons completed and four still to come, supporters are continuing to follow his progress as he takes on the ultimate test of endurance — one continent at a time.
