Preparation works start for Aylesbury's new Haydon Hill cycleway

This eagerly anticipated extension to the Waddesdon Greenway will provide a cycle and pedestrian friendly route all the way from Waddesdon Manor to Aylesbury town centre via Aylesbury Vale Parkway railway station and Haydon Hill.

The clearance works, scheduled for 20 and 21 October, need to be completed early to avoid the upcoming bird nesting season and will mean construction can start on time in April 2021.

The new 650 metre off road cycleway, together with three new bridges, is expected to take four months to finish, however weather conditions and any Covid-19 restrictions may mean changes to the planned timetable.

The cycleway received planning permission in July and will eventually help create a dedicated cycle and walking route all the way from the centre of Aylesbury to Waddesdon Manor and village.

Buckinghamshire Council Cabinet Member for Transport, Nick Naylor said: "When it's built, the new link will make cycling much easier and safer and walking will be much more pleasant too.

In the light of a national post-Covid19 desire for greener and healthier ways to get around, I'm really pleased we're seeing the clearance works taking place now in preparation for this much needed scheme." Nick added, "All being well, we should see the cycleway open next summer, which is great news."

Stone and Waddesdon local councillors, Paul Irwin and Ashley Waite said: "It's great that the delivery of this scheme is now in sight and these early works pave the way for next year's construction.

"We're both delighted we've got to this point and when finally completed, it will be a great new asset for both our residents and visitors to use."
