A major retailer has agreed to fund the regeneration of a popular Aylesbury mosaic, which symbolises a crucial former business in the town.

Aylesbury Town Council has announced that Tesco will fund the refurbishment of the Hazell Watson and Viney wall.

Located on the boundary wall of the large Tesco located in Tring Road, the mosaic represents the former business it was named after.

For decades Aylesbury was known as a printing town with over a quarter of the town’s population working at Hazell Watson and Viney printing site by the late 1930s.

For over 20 years, a large Tesco supermarket has stood where the former factory used to be. To recognise the history of the business it replaced, Tesco has agreed to fund repairs to the wall.

Aylesbury Town Councillors Mark Willis and Sherrilyn Bateman both campaigned for the repairs and told the company that it had suffered from poor preservation.

After agreeing to the repairs last month, Tesco is sourcing appropriate mosaic tiles which are expected to be delivered in late December, when maintenance and conservation work of the mosaic will commence.

Aylesbury Town Council is asking for anyone who has kept any of the tiles missing from the wall to return them so they can be used in the makeover.

Councillor Bateman said: "I am extremely pleased Tesco have agreed to preserve and maintain the mosaic and for it to be seen by future generations. I have happy memories of my Grampy working there and waving at me from his window, as I walked by on my way home from school.”
