The group are calling on the MP to support both a fair and just Green recovery to Build Back Better after the economic fall out of the pandemic, and to endorse the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill that has had its first reading in Parliament.

Other members of the climate activist group have already been in dialogue with the Buckingham MP, Greg Smith, about the Bill.

Mary, one of the small group of local residents delivering the letter to Rob Butler under the watchful eyes of three Community Police Support officers, said:

"It is about young people and tomorrow’s world.

"I’m not a grandparent but I see other people’s children and grandchildren and I want them to know the richness of the world that I have known, and not the disasters which are being predicted by thousands of scientists.

"We live in a democracy and I want our MP to listen, and represent our views as his constituents."

The Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill (CEE Bill) has received significant cross-party support from MPs so far, but not yet from any Conservative MPs. Parliament’s own Committee on Climate Change 4 reported recently that:

"Since June 2018, Government has delivered only 1 of 25 critical policies needed to get emissions reductions back on track….

"The year ahead is a critical moment for global progresson climate change…. It has never been more important for the UK to demonstrate strong climate leadership, both for the world's future and for the UK's standing within it."

The CEE Bill, written by lawyers, scientists and environmentalists, is designed to bring the climate and ecological emergency to the forefront of the Government’s priorities, and to ensure that the urgent existential crisis is top of the Government agenda.

It offers a robust plan to deal with the UK’s fair share of emissions and halt rises in global warming, as well as tackling the crisis in biodiversity and habitat loss.

Another key feature of the Bill is to hold a national Citizens’ Assembly to help determine the difficult priorities and choices that need to be worked out in the light of the full scientific evidence.

Under the terms of the CCE Bill, the future Citizens’ Assembly will empower MPs to take the necessary decisions, and allow people to have a real say in the pathway to a zero carbon society, enriched by a thriving, natural world.
