Aylesbury's Timothy Long breaks solo record for sailing around Britain

The BBC reported that he set sail on 16 July from Hamble Marina, Hampshire, navigating anti-clockwise around the coast.

He arrived back into the marina, aboard his 28ft (8.5m) vessel, at about 11:00 BST having covered more than 1,600 nautical miles.

Timothy took part in the challenge to raise funds for The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

In an amazing effort, he raised more than £7,000.

He broke the record of Tom Webb, who sailed around Britain aged 17 in 2011.

Writing on his just giving page before the trip, Tom said: "Ellen MacArthur has been an absolute inspiration to me and that is why I am raising funds for her Cancer Trust charity.

"What I have always loved about sailing is the freedom it brings and the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust enables young people who are a similar age to me and have been through the worst of times to experience that feeling and boost their confidence.

"It's a cause that is close to my heart, so please do support them."
