There’s nothing like South Pacific - extra dates added!

THE big blockbuser musical of the autumn season at Milton Keynes Theatre is the award-winning South Pacific and tickets have been selling so fast that the venue has had to add an extra two dates to the schedule.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s unforgettable show was already down for a two-week run starting Wednesday. If you weren’t lucky to get tickets the first time around there are now two extra shows at 2.30pm on Thursday, October 13 and 20.

Samantha Womack stars as Nellie Forbush along with Loretta Ables Sayre in the role of Bloody Mary (a performance for which she was Tony-nominated in New York). Welsh National Opera star Jason Howard will be starring in the role of Emile de Becque. Jason, who also starred in the original Broadway production, is recognised as one of the UK’s leading performers on the international operatic stage.

Also starring will be musical theatre stars Daniel Koek (Tony in the recent UK hit production of West Side Story) as Lt Joe Cable and Alex Ferns, an MKT much-loved regular (Nathan Detroit in Donmar’s Guys and Dolls) as Luther Billis.

South Pacific is considered one of the best musicals ever written with a score that includes Some Enchanted Evening, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair, Bali Ha’i, I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy, Younger than Springtime, Happy Talk and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.

But the songs often detract from the gritty storyline, which, far from being featherweight padding around the soundtrack, is a thought-provoking look at racial prejudice in the 1940s.

Set on a tropical island during World War II, this is the sweeping romantic story of two couples, threatened by the realities of war and by their own prejudices. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an unfamiliar culture in wartime remains as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences.
