There’s echoes of Lord Of The Flies about the story but in typical Potter-fashion there’s a twist in the tale. Originally written for BBC TV’s Play For Today series, and winning widespread critical and commercial acclaim, the youngsters’ roles are played by adult actors - and to great effect. The original cast included Dame Helen Mirren, Michael Elphick and John Bird.

The story follows seven children one wartime summer. It all seems so innocent - until the games, and the menace created by power plays among the gang, escalate out of control and towards tragedy.

The play is famous for its spirited playfulness and humour that is twisted into a shocking and brutal crescendo.

The day doesn’t end perfectly, just as life is not always perfect. It’s often described as a piece that reflects on the human capabilities for brutality and the human capabilities for joy, pleasure and wonder.

Be prepared to laugh - and be shocked. Potter has a wicked sense of humour.
