Kiss Me, Kate opens

THEATRE fans looking for another excuse to visit the country’s top regional venue can delight in Cole Porter’s delightful Kiss Me, Kate which opened at Chichester last night (Monday) and runs, in rep, until September 1.

It’s Chichester Festival Theatre’s big summer musical and stars Adam Garcia, Alex Bourne and Hannah Waddingham with Trevor Nunn in the director’s chair and choreography by Stephen Mear.

Kiss Me, Kate is an exuberant show-within-a-show, bringing together the worlds of gun-toting gangsters, sparring actors and Shakespeare’s original characters from The Taming of the Shrew.

Alex Bourne (We Will Rock You, Chicago, Grease, Beauty and the Beast and Only The Lonely) plays Fred Graham/Petruchio. the award-winning Hannah Waddingham (The Wizard of Oz) will play Lilli Vanessi/Kate.

David Burt (Les Mis, Cats, Crazy For You) will play Gangster 1 and Adam Garcia will play Bill Calhoun/Lucentio. His theatre credits include West End productions of Grease, Saturday Night Fever (in which he played the central character Tony Manero), Wicked and Tap Dogs. He was recently a judge on television’s Got To .

Stage and screen star Clive Rowe will play Gangster 2.
