Gang wars as West Side Story comes to Court Theatre

The youth arm of the critically acclaimed Tring Festival Company bring a modern twist to a classic tale in one of the best-loved musicals of all time - West Side Story.

Now in its 34th year, and following the roaring success of Footloose in 2010, the company wanted to continue to raise the bar in every respect. Widely renowned as one of the most difficult musicals to perform, the young production team headed up by director Amy Dunstall, musical director Rob Schafer, choreographer Andrea Campusano and vocal Coach Emma Brown, auditioned in late January and were overwhelmed by the response.

Featuring over 55 extremely talented young performers between the ages of 10-25 years from across the local area, Director Amy Dunstall said: “We are very excited to take up the challenge this show presents. The cast have worked so hard and have been so committed to this project, rehearsing twice a week since March.

“We feel it is vital to give young performers the opportunity to sing, dance and act as part of their extra-curricular activities. We are very proud that many of the people that have been involved in TFC youth productions in the past have gone on to have professional careers and continue to work and perform in the West End and indeed across the world!”

Drawing on the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story transplants the action to 1950s New York City. The Sharks and The Jets, rival gangs, are gearing up for a rumble to end all rumbles, when reluctant Jet Tony falls in love with Maria, sister of the leader of the Sharks. Can love end the turf war, or will it all end in tragedy?

Running at The Court Theatre, Tring, from Sep 4-8 with a matinee on the last day. For tickets call the box office: 07543 560 478 or www.courttheatre.co.uk. For a sneak preview of the performance visit www.deetv.tv
