WITH Aylesbury undergoing fundamental change, it is heartening to learn that Bucks County Council has agreed to preserve the Quarrendon Ancient
Monument.
They have described the site as one of the finest ancient monuments in Bucks and the decision to safeguard the medieval village and Tudor Garden is one that must be applauded.
It is also somewhat ironic that the site sits between the Berryfields a
nd Weedon Hill estates.
For these are two developments which will contribute towards changing
the face of Aylesbury as we know it.
Admittedly there are other more important priorities for councils but in a time when Aylesbury is set to take on thousands of new homes, it is
important that the new arrivals and those already here have a 'green lung' and that we hold on to relics of the town's past that may otherwise eventually be forgotten.
How the leader of Aylesbury Vale District Council can say he didn't get any great thrill from walking around the ruins and even worse perhaps, describe them as a 'collection of old bricks' is a comment that will
mystify many.
At least Bucks County Council has shown some common sense.
