CAN there really be anybody left in Aylesbury Vale who doubts drinking and driving is a deadly combination?
Every year lives are lost as a result of the idiots who climb behind the wheel after consuming alcohol.

Of course, if it was only their own safety being put at risk it wouldn't be a problem, but all too often it is the innocent family travelling in the opposite direction which is left with the most devastating legacy of their stupidity.

For years now, the police have launched bi-annual drink-drive campaigns aimed at rooting-out those rogue motorists who either think they're above the law or that they're too skilled behind the wheel to possibly cause an accident.

So why is it that - after a long period of falling figures - the trend now seems to be going in the opposite direction?

A shameful one in ten of all those breathalysed on Thames Valley roads during June tested positive for drink-driving.

Suddenly the message is failing to get through to drivers of all generations.

In an age of Grand Theft Auto and Gone in 60 Seconds, people seem to have become impervious to the once-shocking images of road crashes still used to illustrate the cost of drink-driving in TV ads.
We are all responsible for the safety of the society in which we live. We may not drink and drive ourselves, but how many of us can honestly claim not to have seen somebody else push the limits over the last 12 months?

Let's all make a pledge, right now, to put an end to this Russian roulette on our roads.

It's the duty of all of us to stop the deadly menace.

What do you think of this story?
