AYLESBURY jiu jitsu star Sahid Khamlichi won a silver medal at the prestigious European Open tournament in Lisbon last week.
Sahid, 36, who trains and teaches at the Roger Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy Buckinghamshire, Aylesbury, was pipped by a single point in the final after winning three fights in a row.
The competition in Portugal was contested by world class athletes from across the globe and popular Sahid finished in a hugely credible second in the purple belt medium-heavyweight category.
He said: “There were 18 people fighting in my division.
“I won three fights to make it to the final but was beaten by a single point.
“I’m really happy as it’s a huge thing for me because it is against some of the best fighters in the world.
“I won a silver last year but this time I was a grade higher which meant I was facing different people.”
Despite achieving a silver to savour, Sahid said he intended to train hard and come back for the gold next year.
“My 12 month plan is to win the gold next year after training really hard.
“Then I will be looking towards the World Championships.
“Brazilian jiu jitsu is notoriously difficult to progress in so I am expecting to remain at purple for another year and a half.
“I would like to thank Karl Rowley who has helped me with conditioning and training and Kev Capel who has put the time in to get us sparring partners.
“This year has been my best year you can’t get anywhere in this sport without the help of your teammates.”
