Star Phillips is destined for a top-five club

MATT Phillips will only go to one of the top five clubs in the country when he leaves Blackpool.

That’s according to the Aylesbury-born forward’s boss Ian Holloway, who watched his star asset put in yet another eye-catching display with two goals in a 3-1 win over against fellow Championship promotion hopefuls Cardiff last Saturday.

Phillips, a former Bedgrove youth footballer and Grange School pupil, has been in scintillating form for the Seasiders and hit his ninth goal in his last nine games at the weekend.

Ironically, Phillips turned the screw against the club who had made a late and ‘derisory’ £800,000 bid for his services during the January transfer window.

Speaking after the game, Holloway lauded his young star, insisting he is destined for the very top.

“I think they (Cardiff) were a little bit ambitious there, if he goes anywhere it’ll be one of the top five clubs in the country,” Holloway said.

“He won’t have to wait for Cardiff to become that, so slightly ambitious, slightly outrageous.

“But nevermind, it proves they’re right doesn’t it, what he’s done today.

“What Matt Phillips is managing to do now is believe in himself and find the back of the net.

“He’s a good lad, he’s a good player and shows what he can do.

“We’ve got to get everything right around him for him to shine.

“It’s just wonderful when he runs with it (the ball).”

Despite all the speculation, Phillips said he feels relieved to still be pulling on a Blackpool shirt after a manic January.

The 20-year-old said: “It was a good day and I really enjoyed it.

“This team believes it can do really good things.

“We all believe we can get automatic promotion but we are just silently going about our business.

“We are creeping up the table nicely, so who knows what it is going to happen?

“It is nice to know other clubs are looking at me and are interested, but I am contracted to Blackpool and happy to be here.

“I want to help the club get promoted.”
