A home Paralympic gold medal, a painted post box outside her family home in Weston Turville, her face on a stamp and now The Bucks Herald Sports Personality of London 2012 award ... it has been quite a year for Pam Relph.

The adaptive rower admits she has enjoyed a dream year but hopes it is just the start as she aims for more glory at Rio 2016.

She said: “It was an unbelievable summer for sport in Great Britain, I am so, so proud to say I was a part of it .

“It didn’t sink in for a long time to be honest but it is back to hard training for the World Championships and then Rio.”

The rower struck gold with her teammates David Smith, James Roe, Naomi Riches and cox Lily van den Broecke in the mixed coxed four.

However, there were so many heroes to choose from over the summer. Relph singled out Katherine Grainer in the Olympic women’s double scull for praise.

“There was such an expectation on her after winning three silvers in a row at the last three Olympics. It was very inspiring to watch them come home with the glory of which they deserved every bit.”

The Herald award means Relph will receive a free three-month membership to Nuffield Gym in Fairford Leys and a free sports massage.

The rower added: “Ask any athlete and they will tell you that every bit of help they can get will be beneficial. I intend to use the gym over Christmas.

“I’ve had a wonderful break as I took my sister Monica to New York as a surprise, since she introduced me to rowing two years ago. I couldn’t have had the success I did without her help.”
