Adaptive rower Pam Relph cried tears of joy after she helped Britain’s mixed coxed four win a superb gold at Eton Dorney on Sunday, cheered on by none other than the Duchess of Cambridge.

After two fourth-placed finishes for the other GB boats, Relph, David Smith, James Roe, Naomi Riches and cox Lily van den Broecke provided a win.

Kate cheered with delight as Relph and co pulled away from their German rivals and crossed the finish line first.

The rower, who only took up the sport last year after being forced to step down as an Army officer with debilitating arthritis, added the top Paralympic honour to the World Championship gold in her trophy cabinet.

Relph and her sister Monica, who is an able-bodied Team GB U23 rower with hopes of competing at Rio 2016, are both Bucks Herald Sports Personality award winners – Pamela finishing third in the Sports Personality of the Year 2011 vote.
